Summary of the issues discussed:
The session focussed on clinical trials, specifically the state of trials within Wales. Dr Ceri Bygrave, Consultant Haematologist and Clinical Lead at Cardiff and Vale UHB, gave a presentation on her experience of the clinical trials environment in Wales, including the need for blood cancer trials and why patients are missing out on research in Wales. Mr Joe Kiely, Science and Policy Advisor at Cancer Research UK also gave a presentation which offered an insight into a clinical trials workforce survey conducted by Cancer Research UK.

Summary of the issues discussed:
Joint session between the CPG on Cancer and CPG on Smoking and Health on Age of Sale legislation. The session focussed on the Tobacco and Vapes Bill in Westminster and was framed around the benefits of Wales adopting this legislation via a Legislative Consent Motion. A presentation was given by Professor Ann McNeil at King’s College London on the harms of tobacco. Dr Julie Bishop, Director of Health Improvement at Public Health Wales, provided Wales-specific data on smoking and disease and Suzanne Cass, Chief Executive Officer of ASH Wales, also gave a presentation on the most recent Smokefree Survey conducted by the organisation.

An AGM was conducted to hear nominations for David Rees MS to continue as Chair and for Cancer Research UK to continue providing secretariat for the group for the forthcoming year. The session was focussed on children and young people with cancer in Wales, with a presentation from representatives of the Welsh Cancer Alliance subgroup on Children and Young People - Menai Owen Jones, Consultant Chief Executive of LATCH Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity, who provided an overview of services for families and children in South Wales, as well as Lauren Marks and Andrew Reynolds on behalf Young Lives vs Cancer, who focused on the challenges facing children and young people’s cancer services in Wales alongside recommendations for improving services to better meet the needs of children and young people and their families.
